FAQ
Business Model Canvas questions, answered
Everything people ask about the framework itself and about this tool. If your question is not here, the nine-block guide probably covers it.
Which strategy frameworks does OnePageCanvas include?
Eighteen: Business Model Canvas, SWOT Analysis, Lean Canvas, Value Proposition Canvas, PESTLE Analysis, 4Ps Marketing Mix, Empathy Map, Eisenhower Matrix, AARRR Pirate Metrics, RICE Prioritization, Porter's Five Forces, Balanced Scorecard, Blue Ocean Strategy (ERRC grid), Ansoff Matrix, BCG Matrix, Value Chain Analysis, McKinsey 7S, and OKRs. Every framework has its own guided editor, a block-by-block guide, and worked examples, and they all share the same exports: PDF, PNG, Markdown, JSON, Excalidraw, and blank printable worksheets.
What is a Business Model Canvas?
The Business Model Canvas is a one-page strategic template that describes how an organisation creates, delivers, and captures value. It was developed by Alexander Osterwalder and Yves Pigneur and published in Business Model Generation in 2010. The canvas splits a business into nine building blocks: customer segments, value propositions, channels, customer relationships, revenue streams, key resources, key activities, key partners, and cost structure. Because it fits on one page, it makes the whole model visible at once, which is what allows you to spot the parts that do not add up.
Is this Business Model Canvas tool really free?
Yes. Every feature is free with no signup, no trial, no watermark, and no export limit. You can create unlimited canvases and export them as PDF, PNG, Markdown, or JSON. The site is supported by advertising rather than subscriptions.
In what order should I fill in the nine blocks?
Start with customer segments, then value propositions, because every other block is a consequence of who you serve and what you offer them. Then work outward: channels, customer relationships, and revenue streams describe the demand side; key resources, key activities, and key partners describe the supply side; and cost structure comes last, since you cannot cost activities and resources you have not yet defined. The blocks in this tool are numbered in that order.
Where is my canvas stored? Do you see my data?
Your canvas is stored only in your own browser using localStorage. Nothing is uploaded, there is no account, and no server receives your business model. That also means your work is specific to that browser and device — use JSON export to move a canvas somewhere else or to keep a backup.
Can I export the Business Model Canvas as a PDF?
Yes. Choose Export and then PDF for a print-ready A4 landscape page laid out in the standard nine-block grid. If a block contains more notes than fit in its cell, a second page lists that block's full contents, so nothing is silently cut off. PNG, Markdown, and JSON exports are also available, and browser printing is supported.
How do I share my canvas with a co-founder or my team?
Press Share to copy a link that contains the whole canvas compressed into the URL itself. Anyone who opens it gets an editable copy in their own browser. Because there is no server, the link is a snapshot rather than a live collaborative document — for a shared source of truth, export JSON and keep it in your repository or drive.
What is the difference between the Business Model Canvas and the Lean Canvas?
The Lean Canvas is Ash Maurya's adaptation for early-stage startups. It keeps the one-page format but replaces four blocks: key partners becomes problem, key activities becomes solution, key resources becomes key metrics, and customer relationships becomes unfair advantage. The Business Model Canvas is better for describing and comparing business models, including existing ones; the Lean Canvas is better for a brand-new idea where the biggest risk is that nobody has the problem you think they have.
How long should a Business Model Canvas take to complete?
A useful first draft takes 30 to 60 minutes. Treat it as a thinking tool rather than a document: fill every block quickly, note which entries are assumptions rather than facts, then spend your real effort testing the riskiest assumptions. Teams that spend a week perfecting the wording usually learn less than teams that draft three versions and talk to ten customers.
Can I use the Business Model Canvas for an existing business?
Yes, and it is often more revealing than using it for a new idea. Map the business as it actually operates today, not as the strategy deck describes it. The gaps between the two — an unprofitable segment nobody wants to drop, a channel that no longer works, costs attached to activities that no longer matter — are exactly what the canvas is good at exposing.
Do I need to credit Osterwalder or Strategyzer?
The Business Model Canvas is published under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 licence, so you are free to use and adapt it, including commercially, provided you attribute the original authors and share adaptations under the same licence. This site is an independent tool and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Strategyzer.
Does the canvas work on a phone or tablet?
Yes. On a phone the nine blocks stack into a single guided column in the recommended fill-in order, on a tablet they form two columns, and from around 1024 pixels wide you get the true Osterwalder grid. PDF and PNG exports always use the standard nine-block layout regardless of the device you created the canvas on.
Can I work on more than one business model at a time?
Yes. Use the Canvases menu to create, switch between, duplicate, and delete canvases. Duplicating is the fastest way to compare variants of a model — for example the same product sold by subscription versus by usage — because you can change one block and read the consequences side by side.
