Marketplace Business Model Canvas Template
A platform matching two interdependent segments, monetised through a commission on each transaction.
A marketplace canvas differs from every other model in one specific way: Customer Segments contains two entries that cannot exist without each other. Neither side has any reason to show up before the other does.
That means the canvas has to answer the cold-start question explicitly. Which side do you build first, what do you subsidise, and what is the smallest geography or category in which supply and demand can actually meet?
Customer Segments
- Supply side: independent providers seeking demand
- Demand side: buyers who want vetted choice quickly
- Power sellers driving a disproportionate share of volume

- Both: escrowed payments and dispute resolution
- Reviews and ratings make quality legible before purchase

What this canvas reveals
- Fill Customer Segments with both sides, then write a separate value proposition for each. A single blended proposition hides the hardest problem.
- Liquidity beats scale. A marketplace that clears reliably in one city or one category is worth more than a thin one everywhere.
- Take rate is constrained by the value you add beyond introduction — trust, payments, dispute resolution, logistics.
- Disintermediation is the standing risk: if both sides can transact off-platform after the first match, the model leaks.
